| Dec 11, 2005 | "Hello Dennis, just another Scarbro boy, My name is Glen R. (Bo) Fields. I was born in Scarbro and delivered by Nancy Gooch's Grand Father at home. | Dec 9, 2005 | "Dear Annette (Thompson), Dennis Chadra forwarded your message to me as you requested. I agree that Dennis has done a very admirable job on the website and has been excellent at helping many of us make contacts. We owe him our thanks for sure! I would be most pleased to share any genealogy info with you. I visited Wysoka, Poland in May 1993 and was able to tour the house (original thatched roof log home) where he was born as well as the church and town. It was a thrill for me and my older sister Susie who currently lives in Cleveland, Ohio. I took quite a bit of video of the area. We also made contact with and visited with over 50 cousins. I have learned some Polish as an adult (my parents never taught me as a child) and correspond with a number of these cousins. In fact, as I write this, I have been in the process of preparing my Christmas card notes to these cousins in Polish. My father's mother was Katarzyna (Gnojek) Dziedzic. She died Oct. 12, 1963 at age 93. She was the daughter (corka in Polish) of Jana (John) and Marianny (Mary Ann) Gnojek. I do have a couple of pictures of her as well as a Virgin Mary porcelain statue that she always kept in her home. I asked for something of hers to remind me of her from my cousins and they gave me that statue when I visited her grave in 1993. I was told she was a devout Catholic and prayed her Rosary every day. Polish families under Soviet occupation lived a harsh and dirt poor life. It was impossible to know where they were living or even if they were alive. I am attaching a copy of my Dad's birth certificate which I obtained at the Catholic Church in Wysoka, Poland in 1993. It shows his mother's maiden name and parents names also. Hopefully, this is useful for you in determining something about your her and whether she is related. I look forward to hearing more from you. The name Krzysiek brings back some memories for me. I seem to recall my Mom, (also a Polish immigrant, but not from Wysoka), my Dad, and my Grandma Mary Ann Musial mentioning that name, but I was to young to recall specifics. My Uncle Carl Musial now age 93 still lives in Scarbro and has an absolutely astounding memory. I will ask him for any recollections he might have. Merry Christmas, Best regards." Ed Dziedzic (pronounced "jeh jeets" in Polish) |

| Dec 8, 2005 | "Hi Dennis, Thanks for having such a wonderful site. I am
beginning family genealogy research since my grandfather, Wojciech
Krzysiek, came from Austria-Hungary (Poland) to Scarbro and worked
in the Sun Coal Mines, I am told, between 1905 - 1920's. Your site is
adding great background information to my fledging searches. One of
your correspondents, Edward Dziedzic, seems to have relatives
who emigrated from the same town in Poland that my grandfather was
from. Also, that surname appears as my great-great-grandmother's name.
Could you have him get in contact with me or vice-versa so he might be
able to help me with some information? I would appreciate it very
much. In the meantime, keep up the great work." Annette Thompson Reply: Annette, I forwarded your request to Edward Dziedzic. Dennis Chadra dennis@scarbrowv.com |
| Nov 26, 2005 | "Dennis: I found your web page last night. Very nice. I am planning on going to Minden, WV next month. My father was born there in 1917. His father was a coal miner and the family lived in Minden, just up the hill from Scrapper's Corner. He and I have visited there twice in the late 1980s. We have attended the Minden Reunion and I met some wonderful people there, including Stanley and Marie Bender. I see that Stanley has passed on. There are several places I wanted to visit. There was a small Catholic Church located several miles from Minden that my grandmother attended. As I recall, it was closed during our visit, but the grave of the priest was in the small graveyard to the rear. This was my mother's priest. They arrived in 1911 and left for Chicago in 1924, so I have to think that the priest was alive during that time. It may be the SS Peter and Paul Church in Oak Hill, but the priest mentioned passed away in 1918. This may have been the one I am looking for. Can you give me any help? Any assistance would be helpful. By the way, my father was Bruno Zemaitis. He was known as Brian or Bronius during his time there. Grandfather, Joseph Zemaitis worked for the New River and Pocahontas Coal Co. Grandmother was Ursula. Other siblings in the family were Joseph, William, Anthony, Kate (Katherine) and one other sister, whose name I cannot recall right now. My grandfather's brother and family moved to Grand Rapids, MI about the same time my family moved to Chicago." Regards," Edward J. Zemaitis |
| Nov 17, 2005 | "Dennis: I am beginning our family tree. My grandfather’s name was John Blake and he lived & died in Scarbro, West Virginia. He was married to Anna Elizabeth Poole Blake (died in Oak Hill). They had six children: George Blake (lived & died in Conn), Stuart Blake, Jessie Walker Blake (still living in Conn.), Russell Blake (lived in Oak Hill & died in S.C.), Sammy Blake (lived & died in Oak Hill) and Ella Blake (my mother lived & died in Charlotte, NC). Any information that you may have on any of these would be appreciated." Betty White |
| Nov 14, 2005 | "Hi Dennis, I am a cousin to the Myles "Pete" Johnson
family. His wife was my Fathers Sister Did you know the kids. They are
Grover, Allen, Tom, Kay, Butch and
Sussie. My mom had some pictures of the Johnson's house
but I don't know if my sister has all her pictures. If I can find them
I will send them if you want. I have a distant cousin Evon who
was married to Jerry Warwick. There was a Mary Jane Sanchez
that worked at Mr Mann's Store down by the tracks. Her and her
sisters Catherine and Elinore used to go dancing at Gee's
Coffee Shop at Kincaid. If this is the same person, I would like to
get in touch with her. If you have her E-Mail address would you send
it to me or send her mine and let her E-Mail Me." Dana Wriston,
Shawnee, Ok. Reply: Dana, I forwarded your request to Mary Jane Sanchez. Thanks for your interest in contributing to the site. Dennis Chadra dennis@scarbrowv.com |

| Nov 12, 2005 | "Dennis, first I commend you on such a great site. Found it surfing the web. My name is Dan Fogarty. I'm from the Nashville, Tennessee area. My mother marries into the Godbey family early 30's. She and Harry Godbey lived in Charleston (WV). He drowned in 1935. He had epileptic seizures (and) fell face first into a mud puddle and drowned. After Harry's death Mom married my Dad. His relatives lived in Oak Hill, their names were Rosie Godbey and her son Jesse who worked in the coal mines. As a young man (about 1959) we would visit them. Seems like I remember Jesse saying something about working the Whipple mine. If my mind serves me correctly she had an older son already deceased by the time I started to visit them. His name was Robert Godbey. I have some photos of them. Do you know of someone that can help me with a small amount of family history?" Thanks, Dan Fogarty |
| Oct 25, 2005 | "Hello again Dennis. I am glad to see you are getting to spend
more time with the site. It is good so many former Scarbro residents
and family are finding it and also using it as a research tool. I
thought I would finally take the time and send the picture of my
former comrades in arms of the
536th MP Co. Munich Bavaria Germany 1965-1967. After 38 years
we finally located each other and decided to have a mini outfit
reunion in July 2005. As the Oak Hill WV area was most central to all
attending it was decided to bivouac at the Holiday Inn at Oak Hill. It
was truly surprising to me how much these guys really enjoyed the Oak
Hill and Fayette County area. They really went on about the scenery
and the friendliness of the people in the area. They liked it so much
that they talked about having another reunion next year and coming
back to the same place. Here is the article about the reunion as
printed in the Fayette Tribune. Thanks once again for such a nice
site. BJ Bernath “Slight control 30 to Slight Control 32, call me at 304……...” That was the message that former 536th MP Co. patrol supervisor BJ Bernath left on the answering machine of Duane Plassman, his former MP traffic accident investigator when he was in Munich Bavaria Germany in 1965-1967 after 38 years. BJ had finally located his old comrade in arms by doing a white page search on the internet and getting lucky. When Duane returned the call he was excited to learn that BJ had located and was visited last fall by another 536th member, Oliver Wall and his wife Geneva. Immediately Duane suggested trying to find more of their former comrades and getting together for a squad reunion. Duane, his son, and BJ began a internet search of the last locations where they remembered the other squad members living. In short order they had located five others in Maryland, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, South Carolina and Iowa. As West Virginia was the most central location for all to travel it was decided to have it in Oak Hill with the Holiday Inn at Oak Hill to be the base of operations for their first meeting in 38 years. While here, the group had breakfast on Friday at the New Pancake House and they were so impressed with the friendly service and food that they decided to breakfast there on Saturday also. Touring the area on Friday the group stopped in Fayetteville and looked at the historic sights and Courthouse. They were surprised to see the old jail and museum closed. Turning to walk away they met Deputy Pete Lopez and when BJ introduced them as former Military Policeman he said he would go around and open the door for them and then proceeded to give them a great guided tour. The group visited the New River Gorge Bridge, Tamarack, and had dinner on Saturday at Smokey’s on the Gorge. The entire group commented on the beauty of the scenery and the friendliness of everyone they came into contact with in the area and made plans for another reunion in the area for next year. Attending were: Louis Holder - South Carolina, Henry Woods - Pennsylvania, Duane Plassman -Ohio, Oliver Wall and wife Geneva -North Carolina, BJ Bernath and wife Helen - West Virginia, David Irwin and wife Lynn –Maryland. Contacted but unable to attend were Richard Bryson - Georgia, and Mike Eversole – Iowa. |

| Oct 25, 2005 | "Hi, Saw your site and enjoyed it very much. Now and then I would
see some names I recognized. I was born in the Pax area and had many
(early) kin in the Lively and Plum Orchard area. I was a message from
a Charley Pauley and if you would be so kind to forward this
message to him. I do not know Charley but he spoke about the
Tyree Cemetery at Plum Orchard. It just so happened, last week I had
taken my Aunt who is 90 years old to that cemetery. It was the first
time I had ever been there. She wanted to see D.W. Pauley and
wife's gravesite. She, as a young girl, had carried flowers from the
church (near by, but not gone) to the interment of Mr. Pauley
in 1924. D. W. was an Advent Christian Preacher and my aunt is writing
a history of the early Advent Christian Churches in that area. We have
been seeking information on D.W. and his family, sons,
daughters, and/or any stories anyone had heard about his life and
travels. Charley had said he had family buried at Plum Orchard
and I believe the gravesite beside D.W. and Mary Pauley is his
mom and dad, Frank and Nellie Pauley. We also were trying to
figure the connection between the Pauley's and Tyree's.
We know the Tyree's love D.W. and family very much as a person
as well as their minister. If Charley could give us any
information regarding the life, family, travels or stories of D.W.
Pauley we would greatly appreciate it. Also, we would like to know
if he knows anything about a A.B. Pauley. We think he was a
minister too. We have a letter from him to my ggreatgrandfather and
ggreatgrandmother. We would like to hear from Charley on these
two people. Thank you for forwarding this " Martha Jean (Moore)

| Oct 25, 2005 | "Dennis, where are your listings for death's in 2005? Good everyone is healthy and still alive. Also in your listings you have the name Napier, so can you find out any information about where the Napier's are? They use to live on Wingrove Hill. Or see if any of your readers knows anything about them. The daughter's name was Karen. Also I'm hunting for Jeanette Foster, Claudia Malineski, Betty Blevins, or anyone that went to school with me at Scarbro. I found Sharon Price (correspond with her, she's is still the same sweet person with a heart of gold). Bill Bernath (he & his wife are wonderful, they send pictures) but I would still like to know where the others are that when to school with me. Who knows, they could live right next door. Thanks a lot Dennis, I love reading your articles." Janet Clifton Miles |

| Oct 22, 2005 | "Dennis, I was just looking at your site again. I found a picture of Dad (Bill Massie) on the 1947 Sunday school class outside the Baptist church (4th from the left in the back). Raymond Pennock was a bud of his. Dad would have been about 12 when this picture was taken. It looks just like him. Just a bit about Dad, he served in the Air Force in the 50's, flying through H-Bomb clouds to take radiation readings. He married Mom (Tiny Cogar, from Dixie, WV) in '64 and went to work for FMC, wading around in PCB transformers. They had me in '69 (and the world was a more redneck place). We moved to Charlotte in 74 and I grew up there. Dad was the plant engineer for General Tire in Charlotte. Mom died in 82 and Dad died in 84. I moved back to Gauley Bridge, WV in 1985 and stayed there until 1988, when I moved back to Charlotte. I served 3 yrs with the 82d ABN during the Gulf War. After returning, I got my degree from Tech and went to NC. I went to medical school at Lewisburg in 1999 and graduated in 2003. I went to residency in Emergency Medicine at York Hospital (York, PA) and will graduate in 2006. I look forward to meeting you some day, if for nothing else, just to say thank you. Granny (Mattie Massie) and Uncle Ted (James Tedford) still live in Carlisle." Lee Massie |
| Oct 13, 2005 | "Hello Dennis: My name is Danny Bowles and our family moved
from Thayer in 1959 to Scarbro. To me it was heaven, as we had running
water,3 local markets, and all kinds of people to make friends with.
It was like going to a big city for us kids. We first lived in a
apartment behind Smock's Grocery Store on the back alley. Then
we moved to a little small cinder block house on the main road below
the Price mansion as we called it. I did not like it very well
as every dog we got would end up getting hit by a passing auto. Then
we moved across the tracks beside the greatest man I ever knew,
besides my grandpa and dad, Ben A Gooch. In a way he was like a
second dad to me. He taught me a whole lot and to this day I still
have a letter he sent to me when I entered the service in 67. I cut
his grass, painted his fence and anything else he needed. We were true
friends and everyday his memory touches me. He was a very kind and
gentle man and died of black lung from working in & around the mines.
I saw Martha sitting on the front porch one day and decided to
stop and chat with her, knowing her being retired from teaching and
Ben not being around I could perk her up some. That is the last I saw
of her. Sometimes I visit their grave at Sunset in Beckley and pay my
respects. Please forward this to Nancy (Gooch) all though I
never got to meet her. During this time her and her husband were in
Texas, the Air Force, I think. Tell her to email me as I would love to
talk to her. Just tell her that her Dad was really impressed the way
Libby and I got along. My Kindest Regards" Danny Bowles Reply: Danny, I forwarded your request to Nancy. Dennis Chadra dennis@scarbrowv.com |

love the history of family. My great grandmother was Maggie Aliff
of Mossy. My grandma Rosella (Rosie) Powers who just passed
away in August left me with many stories. I'm not sure if its anything
that can help with your history search but I do have an interview she
did with her grandmother, my great great grandmother. All about her
life and her school days. I'm not sure what you're looking for as far
as history but I would love to have any info on my family members
buried in the Mossy cemetery and if I could be of any help with the
info just let me know." Thanks, Amber Piesyk Reply: Amber, Thank you for your the offer to provide a copy of the interview. Please email it to me or mail a copy to: Dennis Chadra 1218 E. Wilson Ave. Wheaton, IL 60189. Dennis Chadra dennis@scarbrowv.com |

Hope you know how many people you have brought back together, this site is just been one of the best things that anybody could have done for us ole Scarbro brats. I now stay close with so many and enjoy and love hearing from them so much. I just thank you for doing such a great job and hope that we can keep the good times remembered. Our parents always tried to be good neighbors to each other and to be there when they needed them now we are all scattered all over the place and this is one way we can be there for our friends, it sure has made my days happier. I still have Mom, she is doing well Alzheimer's is very sad but she is happy and I am glad to have her. Take care and thanks again, love to all my buddies.........stay in touch." If you would like to forward to him, and anyone also looking for the old pictures taken by Ribble in the early 1900's, the owner is George Bragg. The business is GEM Photography, phone 304-256-8400. He has taken pictures of the Scarbro Reunion and many other events in the area with the old equipment for many years now. The cost has been $35.00 in the past but may have changed by now. The work is truly great." Thanks again BJ Bernath |

| Sep 24, 2005 | "Dennis, I cannot believe what a wonderful job you are doing. I love to read your articles. Please add my father's name Sylvester Carroll Clifton passed July, 2001. Reading about Scarbro, makes me miss it more and more. My name is Janet Clifton Miles, Parma, Ohio, my parents were Carroll and Micki (Mildred) Clifton of Stover Hollow. I have one sister, Mona living in Bradenton, Florida and one brother Carroll (Chuck) Clifton Jr. living in Palmetto, Florida. I remember Stover Hollow so differently than it is now. Our house was always full of children. Playing in the Apple Trees, Hayloft, On top of the mountain near Yoney's graveyard. I can remember Florence and Tony Ward, Grace and Obie Ward, Freda and Duff Blevins, Grandma Taylor, Mr. & Mrs. Lawson, Mr. & Mrs. Sanger, Mrs. Phillips, Mrs. Reed, Jim and Violet Macallister, Mr. Mann, Mrs. Vargo, Mrs. Pennington, Mr. & Mrs. Painter, Mr. & Mrs Keffer, Boonie, Millie, (I can't remember Mrs. Boonie). That's what you get when you get older. I can remember our friends that we played with. Dennis and Nina Ward, Gladys Keffer, Charley, CheChee, Billy Joe, Jerry Phillips (he could smell popcorn cooking a mile away) Judy and Wanda Ward, Dallas Macallister, Ronnie Blevins, Kay Johnson and all her brothers. I think we spent more time over there than at home. Mr. & Mrs. Johnson treated all of us kids like their own. We could not wait for the snow to come. Build a fire in an old tire and we would ride our sleds from our apple trees, down the hill and jump the fence with our sleds. Boy that was the good ole days. When I was growing up Stover Hollow was just like one close family, everyone knew everyone else's business. HA HA. Not that anyone was nosey. Backalley as it was known to us was our hangout also. Our best friends were Billy and Deanna Jenkins (we loved Mr. and Mrs. Jenkins especially Mrs. Jenkins with her peanut/jelly sandwiches. Billy Honaker, Brenda and Billy Joe Coffman, my cousin's (The Pauley's family). I could just go on and on. Who don't remember all this. Yes, it does bring back good memories. The bad memories are, whose left in Stover Hollow?????? As far as I can find out, the only originals are Millie and Mr. & Mrs. Mcallister. I am trying to find some girls that I went to Scarbro School with, if anyone can give me any information I would greatly appreciate it. Jeanette Foster, Claudia, Karen Napier. You can email me. I am sorry that I missed Scarbro reunion and hopefully I will be alive and able to attend it next year. Also my sister Mona and I will also miss Mount Hope Class Reunion as we will be touring Europe. But like I said hopefully we will see everyone next year. And we will be looking forward to see a lot of pictures from the reunions. Take care." Janet Clifton Miles |

| Sep 23, 2005 | "I Stumbled upon your web page and ended up in tears. Tears of joy and memories came flooding back. My maiden name was Mona Clifton. My parents were Carroll S. "Feets" Clifton and Mildred "Micki" Clifton who are both deceased. My sister is Janet Clifton Miles and My brother is Chuck Clifton. In l960 I left Scarbro the day after I graduated (at l6) for D.C. was raised on the Clifton farm in Stover Hollow. I can still see the miniature ponies and lambs running and playing on the hillside. The spirit of adventure captured me and I wanted to travel (Europe is beautiful but Scarbro is Special in my heart) and "do things", but my heart was always in Scarbro. We did not realize what a wonderful childhood we had. We roamed the hills, played on Tank Hill and rode horses without a care in the world. I used to ride my palomino stallion up to the Post Office and Company Store and I can definitely tell you that the Company Store and the Theatre were not attached because that was where I tied my horse up in the lot between them. I was so short that if I got off my horse, I couldn't get back on so I would tie my horse there and get off and on using the raised sidewalk. My greatest joy was racing the train on my horse (until Dad found out - someone told!) Then I had to agree to stay away from the tracks. I did for a whole week, finally Dad gave up. Dad and some of the other parents helped organize Scarbro's 4-H Club and the first teen 4-H club. Kids came from all around on the weekends to dance. No booze, no rough stuff, just clean fun. Dad even brought in professional wrestling there to make money for the 4-H. It became the largest 4-H Club in WV. Many of the members only joined to be part of the dance club. We were all close: the Dennis & Nina Ward; Chummy, Chi Chi, Charlie, Billy Jo Keffer; Grover, Allen, Susie Johnson; Brenda & Billy Joe Coffman; Ann & Sonia Sizemore; Deanna & Billy Jenkins. We all looked forward to going to Oak Hill High; however, the area was rezoned and some of us were bussed to Mt. Hope High. My heart was broken but I soon made new friends and loved Mt. Hope High. Amazingly enough, I never lost a single old friend. Unfortunately, growing up and away caused me to lose touch. Brenda Hall found me not long ago and it made my world a lot brighter. Bye for now, I'll be reading you." Mona Clifton Haymore |

| Sep 5, 2005 | "Dennis, My name is Ken Hiser, grandson of Paul and Anna Delridge of Hunk Hill. My mother's name was Rose Barbara. My grandfather died when I was around three years old (probably around 1954). He worked the coal mines in the area. He was from Budapest I believe (as was his wife) whom he met in WV after arriving here. Their house was right across from Mrs. Gillenwater (spelling) and one of their sons (Mike) and his family lived right next door. I have fond memories of visiting Grandma Delridge every year. She died when I was 14. I am in the process of gathering family information and things about Whipple." Ken Hiser Sandusky, Ohio |
| Aug 15, 2005 | "Dear Dennis, You may recall me from a 1915 (approx.) photo of St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church I contributed to you website some time ago and some email correspondence in which we exchanged emails with Brenda Hall. I compliment you for the great job you have done on the website and I enjoy the photos and the correspondence immensely. I have a request/ question. In your mining section would it be appropriate to include the Sun coal camp and mines? My Dad worked there for a number of years before I was born and I can find very little info about that town or the mines. We lived there until 1943 when we moved to Scarbro. I am attaching a picture of the old company store at Sun (1930s) which I have in my family genealogy file. I hope you might include it on your website and possibly draw some further interest from those folks who relate to the Sun coal camp." Best regards, Edward Dziedzic |
| Aug 12, 2005 | "Hi Dennis. I visited your web site and was wondering if you have
any info on the Sts. Peter & Paul church, saw the pictures from June
2000, I believe the cemetery is on the church property. I am a
Novobilsky and there is a Mary Novobilsky buried in that
cemetery and was wondering if the church was still active and that I
might be able to write them and ask for the burial record. Do you have
the address of the church? Any info will be appreciated." thank you,
Pat Novobilsky Patton Cape Coral, FL Reply: Pat, I visited the SS Peter & Paul Church office at the new church in Oak Hill, WV in 2003. They have the original records of baptisms, marriages and births from the Scarbro church which is no longer in use. Also, at the Fayetteville Courthouse you can look up the county records on your family and they will copy the pages for you for a small fee. Dennis Chadra dennis@scarbrowv.com |

My parents, Fred and Rosalie Thompson, were close friends with Frank and Nell Pauley. I’d really love to see any pictures JoAnn might have. | Jun 25, 2005 | "Dennis, I enjoyed reading comments on your website and
reminiscing about the old days. My dad Frank Garcia, owned a
grocery store in Oak Hill 1938 until 1955 across the tracks from what
is now the Oak Hill middle school. We delivered groceries to most of
the mining camps and knew a lot of the people that are mentioned on
your site. I attended SS Peter and Paul Catholic School at Scarbro
1939-1947. As you probably know, the Catholic school had only two
classrooms and grades 1 through 8. Some of my classmates were John
and Casimir Pleva, John Duran, Walter Bokovitz,
Carlo Della Mea, Toney Lopez, Mary Lopez, Joseph
Kopinski, Frankie Lich to name a few. I am preparing a
family history and would like to know if any of your email
contacts might have a picture of the 1947 SS Peter and Paul graduating
class. The pictures that SS Peter and Paul school had were lost when
the school in Oak Hill was remodeled a few years ago." Frank

| May 30, 2005 | "Hi again Dennis. I am going to send you one last picture today. Due to the interest in George Cafego I took a picture of his family grave marker in SS Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery today. My friend Walter Ignatovich took me to it this morning and truly I would have not recognized the spelling of the names had he not done so. One of the brothers named on the stone was killed in the coal miners "Battle of Blair Mountain" previously mentioned on the site. SS Peter and Paul Church held a memorial mass at the cemetery today and it was a very touching service. A picnic lunch was served by the Knights of Columbus after the service and it was a very nice morning. Just as I was leaving the parking lot, George Cafego's niece and family came to the cemetery and we talked with her and took a picture of her at the grave site but I did not write down her name. Perhaps I will get it from Walter one day and send it along to the site also." Thanks again BJ Bernath |

| May 30, 2005 | "Hi again Dennis. I am sending you copies of three old Scarbro photographs. These pictures were given to me today by Walter Ignatovich, a good friend and longtime resident and historian of the Scarbro area. The first small picture is taken from the area of the Methodist Church and shows a wooden building for the company store, possibly built by the White Oak Fuel Company. I am not sure of the history of that. In the background to the right is the old building that was Pleva's Beer Joint and dance hall. The next picture is of Hunk Hill and is taken from the hillside above Orchard Road. It shows a church on top of Hunk Hill and the SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church and Cemetery to the left and center. The third picture is also taken from the Orchard Road area and shows the SS Peter and Paul Church, Cemetery and Catholic Hall that stood in the area where the miners memorial now stands. Perhaps some visitor to the site can enlighten us to the owner of the company store and the denomination of the church on Hunk Hill." BJ Bernath |
| May 30, 2005 | "Hi again Dennis. We had such a good time yesterday I could hardly
wait to get home and write to tell you about it. Once again Casimir
Pleva returned home to play polkas for his friends in the Scarbro,
Whipple area. Cas has a new $10,000 electronic accordion and he
was accompanied by his son Shawn on the trumpet. You simply
cannot believe the sound that came out of those two instruments. They
played for four solid hours and just about wore the dancers out. On
top of that, there was no cover charge or admission fee. The use of
the
Three
Gables Club was once again donated free of charge by Larry
and Sue Navicki and they made everyone feel very welcome. The
Three Gables has been a favorite dancing and dining place for the
young (and young at heart) people from the Oak Hill and Scarbro area
for many, many years and will probably be so for many years to come.
One of the highlights of the afternoon was the surprise arrival of
John Duda, longtime teacher and coach at Collins and Oak Hill
High School. John is a Scarbro native and he grew up on what is
now known as the "Scarbro Loop." John has had health issues
for the past couple of years and has been living with his daughter in
Charleston for some time now. It was truly touching to see him get in
one more dance with "Sis" Jarosz who is 84 herself All in all I
think I can safely say that a great time was had by all that attended.
Casimir is coming back in June to play for the Scarbro,
Whipple, Carlisle Reunion and we are all looking forward to that also.
I am attaching a couple of pictures, one of Casimir and
Shawn and one of John Duda. Keep up the good work on the
site." BJ Bernath Reply: BJ, you always come through for us by keeping the site alive. Thank you so much! . Dennis Chadra dennis@scarbrowv.com |

The first is a picture of a picture that I took in Tudor's Biscuit World in Fayetteville back in Dec (2004). It is of Main Street and Central Ave. Oak Hill with a 1918 Franklin automobile parked in front of where B&T Bank is now. The hotel is long gone. (Walter Caldwell's picture disk probably has a copy of this picture on it but I am not sure) The picture was probably made about 1920. The second is the same location today. The wheel chair ramp in front of Earlier Times Restaurant is where the steps used to be and another building is to the right of it now. I thought you might enjoy seeing the change. George while he was at the University of Tennessee and decided
to put it in a booklet I am doing for the Oak Hill High School's Class
of 1950's 55th reunion. I found some very good information on him on
the Internet that I have added to the article. I grew up close to his
sister's family, the Millers, on the Old Minden Road, Oak Hill.
There were eight boys and one girl in the Miller family as I
recall. Mrs. Miller made bread in an old coal stove that was to
die for. She would pull a big round loaf of bread out of the oven,
break it into chunks, cover it with butter, give each kid a piece, and
it was like, Heaven, I'm in Heaven... Those are good memories. The
reason I am writing this email is to see if the Fayette County

| Jan 21, 2005 | "Hi again Dennis. I was out walking last weekend and was quite
surprised to find the Whipple Company Store open for business. I went
in and found it to be chock full of antiques and collectibles. After
looking around for a while I got to talking with the owner and telling
him about the Scarbro-Carlisle-Whipple web site. He was a very nice
gentleman and quite interested in the history of the area. He gave me
this
picture of the Whipple Company Store 1910-1920 and school with
ball park and bleachers that he thinks dates to about 1910-1920 era to
submit to you, I would encourage anyone traveling to the area to stop
by the store and take a look at history as it was. He also has a
printing press in the basement and does job printing. He does the
printing for George Bragg who has numerous publications on the
Fayette County area and its history. George also has the
negatives of almost all of the old panoramic coal mine and work force
pictures that R.E. Ribble of Mount Hope took many years ago.
George also own the original camera that was used on the group photos
and uses it quite regularly to take reunion pictures for various
groups including the Scarbro, Whipple, Carlisle reunion. I am also
attaching a part of another of R.E. Ribble's pictures of the
Whipple work force
in 1928 showing my father in law Joe Bokovitz and his
brother Matt Bokovitz (sitting between the tracks in the second
and third rows wearing light colored shirts). The brothers also
operated a restaurant in the downstairs part of "Clay's Pool

School in l954. My father and mother, Ben and Martha Gooch,
lived in a big old house across the creek from the New River Company
store and between Pleva's store/Polish Lodge/house and the
Daciek's Happy Hour beer garden. My mother taught school at Mount Hope Jr. High and High School until 1972. My dad worked most of his life with the Engineering group for New River Co. which had its offices under the company store. I have a copy of a history of the area written by Mr. Oyler, whose brother Julius used to live in Scarbro. It is quite interesting and was available at one of the early Scarbro-Whipple-Carlisle reunions. I would be glad to send a copy to you if you are interested. I have attended the reunions each time they are held. Please send me your mailing address if you are interested in the history. It has many pages, and is too long to send electronically. I heard about your site from Margaret Garvin, whose dad owned the Smoke House in Oak Hill (now owned by her brother John). Her Aunt Faye was married to Frank Surber who had a business in Scarbro. My step-grandfather was the Chief of Police of Scarbro when it was incorporated in the 1920's and was also employed at the Lawton-Jasper Motors) later a car repair garage. My Grandfather Gooch was a physician in several coal camps, and people at the early reunions used to tell me that he had delivered them, or one of their siblings. Our house is still there, and has been extensively renovated and improved since I sold it when my mother died in 1982. ..... I am planning to attend this year's reunion and would be interested in hearing from you...." Got a list of names for the Yoney Cemetery and a few pictures. Cemetery has about 12 unmarked or field stone marked graves and is rumored to be very old. The Yoneys had a farm pretty early in the 1900s on past the cemetery westward toward where Plum Orchard Lake is now. The farm was located on Sweetwood Creek as best I can find out and access was either through Sweetwood Hollow or Wingrove Hill. Both locations have a dirt road leading in that direction. Also sending a picture or two of Stover Hollow from the area once known by the local teens as "Water Tank Hill." The hill had a large rock outcrop where many young lovers carved their initials into the rock. Some of which can still be read. The view is looking eastward out of Stover Hollow to the Whipple-Glen Jean road and the town of Hilltop is in the background. Keep up the good work." BJ Bernath |

Different web sites give different numbers for the number of people killed. The second is of a spot on the top of the hill where there were two graves that once had a marker from a funeral home that all that could be read was "Smith" The marker is gone now and all that is left is a rusting, falling down fence and two depressions. The third is the Bragg Cemetery. Several graves are on the outside of the fence and are only marked by plain stones. The fence may contain the grave of one of the early settlers of the Scarbro area. (or it may not?) Last is a list of the names in the three cemeteries. The miners cemetery can be seen from the Miners Memorial on WV 612 by turning your back to the memorial and looking south to the top of the hill over Orchard Row. It is about a mile to either of the two mines from this cemetery." B.J. Bernath |

The brushy one is of the Mahoney part of the cemetery and is not maintained. The second is the Pegram side and someone cuts the grass there. Next will be the Lawson-Webb Cemetery .9 mi. past the top of Carlisle Mtn. toward Dothan." B.J. Bernath |
