Dec 31 2004 "Hi again Dennis. Thought I would send along the names and dates from the Mahoney - Pegram and Lawson-Webb Cemeteries. Both are located along WV 612 between Carlisle and Dothan and both are approx. 150 yards off of the paved road. I will send a couple of pictures of the cemeteries later. Should the need arise, I have pictures of each marker that I will keep on file for a while should anyone want one of them. Use the lists as you see fit. I reserve the right to post them on any other site should the need arise at a later time...." B.J. Bernath

Dec 30 2004 "HI Dennis. I have not seen anything submitted to the site yet on Oak Hill. I am attaching some pictures I took last spring on Main Street. I think we have a beautiful town. The first picture is of the Welcome sign at the Pea Ridge Bridge. Second is the Lewis House, formerly the Thomas Funeral Home. Third is looking South on Main Street from the Lewis House back to Jones Ave. and the hospital on the right. Fourth is looking North at the Lewis house and the old Hotel Hill building. Fifth is looking North toward Central Ave from the Lewis House. Sixth is the old Hotel Hill building that now is apartments and offices. Seventh is looking North from Central Avenue to the Methodist Church. Last is a postcard view of the Hotel Hill and Main Street. The card was sent to me while I was serving in the army in 1966 to remind me of what home looked like. Photo taken about 1962. I have almost completed the inventory of graves in two Carlisle area cemeteries that I will send to you is a couple of days. Enjoying the site very much."  B.J. Bernath

Dec 28 2004 "Dennis,...My good American Legion buddy Bill Bernath told me about your web page...My father had a mercantile store in Scarbro back about 1924 (I was age 1). It burned along with a Fisher's Dept. Store next door and several others. Ruins are still visible along the tracks on the left as you enter downtown Scarbro." Walt Caldwell

Dec 24 2004 "Hi Again... Still searching for info. on "White Oak Road" to no avail. I am going to attach a tract subdivision map of the "Stewart Blake Subdivision" Don't know how it will turn out. The alleyway to the right of the W. E. Deegan property at the left is "Home Brew Alley" or Jasper St. all depending on how old you are. If you enlarge the map you can see it listed as "Woodlawn." "Oak Street" is now known as Cafego Road and now extends to the four lane US 19 on the right (East) of the map Merry Christmas once again."  BJ Bernath

Dec 22 2004 "Dennis, I came across your site today while going some research. You've done a tremendous job. I hope that it continues to grow so that the history of this area can be preserved. My name is Andy (Joe) McKinney. I lived at Whipple from 1971 to 1974. We rented a mobile home from Madge Cummings, then owner / operator of the Company store. There were three mobile home lots located along the main road, across the road and to the front of the Company store. There was also one lot behind the store. As to my research, I've learned that my GGrandmother, Angelina Jones Kincaid (date of death unknown, but probably in the 1930's) was buried in the Catholic Cemetery at Scarbro. I understand that her grave is unmarked. I'm seeking any information that might lead to a directory or some other source that might identify the names and / or locations of the graves within the cemetery. If anyone has any information that could assist me in this endeavor, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks again and keep up the great work!" Andy (Joe) McKinney

Hi Andy, I visited the SS Peter & Paul Church office at the new church in Oak Hill, WV. They have the original records of baptisms, marriages and births from the Scarbro church which is no longer in use. They supposedly also have old yearbooks. They may have the death and interment records from that church. Dennis Chadra dennis@scarbrowv.com

Dec 8 2004 "Dennis, It's been along time. I noticed a posting that said a Jerri work at the drug store. Aunt Geri (Mylenek) Uher worked at Eppy's Drug. It is in her obituaries. Her last residence was 711 Maxwell Hill Rd in Beckley. I'm not sure what street Great Grandma lived on. I do not ever remember hearing of a son that was a priest. I also read your e-mails from Mary Ann Palmieri. I have not contacted her yet. It is on my list to do after the Holiday's, Take care for now." Carrie (Mylenek) Gamrat

Dec 7 2004 "Dennis I think they are the same, I left in 1986, but that is about the age bracket she would be in, very nice family. Like I said earlier I will check with Cooky (Bernath), she still is in her ole homeplace and remembers everybody, will let you know. Haven't heard from Margaret Garvin but have enjoyed talking to Ed Dziedzic and telling him what  his old friends are doing. I am 62, retired so I keep in touch with a lot of the ole gang. You are planning to come to the reunion this year, this is where you will meet the ole timers and hear the stories, when we all get together we just eat, drink and polka! Lots of fun till next time" Brenda Coffman Hall

Dec 6 2004 "Dennis......You are asking about White Oak Rd. I knew a lady by the name of Jerri Mylinic,(sp) that worked at the drug store at Oak Hill, W.Va. she had a brother that was a priest all my life they lived up on the hill behind us that is called Cafego Rd now. Now, is this the same family that you are referring to? Mlynek if so that is the road once called White Oak. The back alley was called Jasper St and also Oak Street. From the back alley you went up around the hill and all the way to Hill Top but now Rte 19 cut thru there and closed off that road. Don't remember the name Zebuk. But I know Jerri and her Mom lived in a big white house on the hill as long as I can remember, and the brother would come and visit but I don't know his name. I'll check with Bill or Cooky Bernath they might remember. Till next time" Brenda Coffman Hall
Reply:
Brenda, if her name was Geraldine born March 28, 1913 and died June 23, 1991, she would be my second cousin and first cousin to my father John Chadra. Some of the Mlynek's change the spelling to Melenek.   Dennis Chadra dennis@scarbrowv.com

Dec 6 2004 "I saw your message on a web site asking if anyone knew the modern name of White Oak Road in Scarbro. Did you ever find the answer? I'm descended from the Zubek family that lived in house 83 on White Oak Road in ca 1910. Thanks for your time." Stormy Henderson
Reply:
Stormy, I have not heard from anyone who may know which present road was once named White Oak Road. My grandfather, Frank Hadra, and the family lived at 47 White Oak Road in 1910. Also my great uncle, John Mlynek, and his family lived at 55 White Oak Road in 1910. I would love to have someone living there now send photos of both houses. Dennis Chadra dennis@scarbrowv.com

Nov 28 2004 "Hi Dennis. Just a note to tell you how much I love this site. We always make it a point to look at it and see who you have heard from. It is so great to see and hear from folks you haven't seen in so many years. Please send my email to Margaret Garvin, I would love to hear from her. I also enjoyed seeing the note from Eddie Dziedzic, I remember him and his family, his Mother was such a nice lady, remember going there to play when we were growing up. Would love to hear from them also. Some update about our family, Mom is still with me she is just about the same Alzheimer's is such a hard thing to deal with but she is fine other wise and does real well. She will be 83 in January. I enjoy hearing from folks, don't get out much so this computer is my road to the world. Love to all of my Scarbro friends. Keep up the good work, I know it is hard for you but it sure brings a lot of happiness to all of us that grew up in that little spot on the map. We were all like one big family and now we are scattered everywhere. Hope to make the reunion this year, it would be so nice to see everybody." Brenda Coffman Hall

Nov 20 2004 "Dennis, You said that your great aunt Antonina Hadra Kosowski was born Dec.24, 1889 in “Wsi Grobowski” near Wieliczka. My Dad was born in Wysoka which is about 25 miles southeast of Wieliczka on Nov. 22, 1895. The term "Wsi Grobowski" in Polish is "the village of Grobowski." It is also nearly in the suburbs of one of the oldest cities in Europe--Krakow. My Grandma Musial was born in Radowice, which is within a few miles. I visited that area including Wieliczka in May 1993 with my Polish cousins who live in Poznan, Poland about 200 miles to the northwest. My cousins drove my sister Susie and I there and we even visited my Dad's old original home with thatched roof that is still lived in. I did an Ellis Island immigration search for your great aunt with no success. I even tried "Hadra" as a maiden name without success. Do you know the name of your great uncle Kosowski? It is probable that my Gradma Musial, Mrs. Malinowski, and your great aunt knew each other--or even came to America together. Wieliczka is the home of a United Nations Class 1 World museum which is a Biblical salt mines dating centuries before Christ. We had the honor to tour that mines which is truly a World Class wonder--the salt mines go several hundred meters in depth and have huge caverns with complete chapels sculptured in the salt rocks--including altars, statues of Christ and the Apostles and famous Saints as well as the Blessed Virgin Mary. It took several hours to move quickly through it with a guide. I just thought you might be interested in these genealogy facts. I also have an official Polish map of that area if you get interested." Best regards, Edward Dziedzic

Edward, Antonina (Hadra) Chadra, age 22, came to Ellis Island on March 16, 1911. Our family interchanged the last name of Hadra and Chadra many times in the last 100 years.. I'm so confused!:)). Antonina Hadra  b. Dec.24, 1889 in “Wsi Grobowski” near Wieliczka – d. Aug 29, 1978 in Chicago. She was brought to America by her brother, Frank Chadra (Hadra), Sr. He introduced her to his friend, Stanislaw “Stanley” Kosowski b. Apr 9, 1890 in Poremba Zegoty Alwernia Pow. Chrzanow, Poland – d. Jan. 18, 1977 in Chicago. They were married in Scarbro, West Virginia in May 29, 1911. Both are buried at Resurrection Cemetery, 7200 S. Archer Avenue, in the Mausoleum, in Summit, Illinois.  The Ellis Island ship manifest provided this: Antonina Chadra, age 22, came to Ellis Island on March 16, 1911 showing her last residence was with her mother Regina Hadrzna of Wieliczka, Galacia (Poland) on the vessel Zieten out of Bremen, Germany. She indicated that she was married (not true) and was a housewife (not true). Final destination was to Husband Franciezk (sp?) Chadra (not true, he was her brother) White Oak Carlisle, WV (true). Geneology is fun, right? Dennis Chadra dennis@scarbrowv.com

Nov 20 2004 "Dennis, Have you been in touch with John Duda? John is former football coach and Math teacher at Oak Hill and the newer (now old) Collins High School which opened in my freshman year in 1950. I consider John my friend as we shared academic interests in Math. John's wife died a few years ago, but I think he is still living in Oak Hill. He recently retired from his volunteer job as head of the Oak Hill Alumni Association. Also, I recall being told that John himself was quite an accomplished athlete--All American (at W.Va. U. as I was told) and tried out for the old Cleveland Browns when they were being coached by the legendary Paul Brown. Brown told John he was too small for the pros as I recall. I have seen John on a number of occasions when I come to West Va. to visit my Uncle Carl Musial (age 92) who lives in Scarbro across the hill from our old Dziedzic home. John is a longtime member of St. Peter and Paul Church and attended it before the new one was built in East End of Oak Hill. He may have old photos to share and I'm sure he would be glad to do it. My Uncle Carl also has a fantastic memory and he was born in Carlisle in a house on the road below the church. Mrs. Malinowski (now deceased) lived there for many years as next door neighbor and a close friend of my Grandma Musial who immigrated from Poland with her in 1907. I don't think there are any Malinowski's still around there. I also had several friends from that area who went to Scarbro Elementary with me. David Holesapple who lived in the corner house diagonally across from the gas station (which is still there) and the company store which is directly across the road. Raymond Pennock (Carlisle), the Massey boys, Shirley Martin, and others I might recall if I look at old pictures. I call my Uncle at least weekly, so I'll ask him about his memories and if he has any pictures. I am attaching a photo of my former home in Scarbro which still looks a lot like this from the road (right side faces north toward the highway). As you can see this picture was taken in the big snowfall about 1948. The second photo is the 1947 Sunday school class outside the Baptist church that stood on a large hill overlooking to the north, the old Mahoney grocery store and the Appalachian Power station (still there as I recall). The boys in the picture to the best of my memory are: Front row left to right --Tommy Collins, Jimmy Munday, Charles Bennett, Joe Mundy, Howard Reid. Back row left to right-- JR Weatherford, Tom Moore, (don't recall 3rd one), Jimmy Massey, "Brownlo" Brown, Raymond Pennock, Ed Dziedzic." Best regards, Edward Dziedzic

I don't know anything about this photo and would appreciate it if anyone can recognize it and provide any comments. The word "Krowiarz" on the banner held by the man to my Dad's left is a Polish word. I think it means "dairymen." Many thanks, Edward Dziedzic

Oct 30 2004 "Dear Dennis, First, I want to thank you and congratulate you on the wonderful website you have established. My name is Edward Dziedzic and my mother and father moved to Scarbro in 1944. Dad purchased the old Vento place on the hill across from the gas station and above the present US Post office. We sold the place in 1986 after my mother died in Oct. 1985. It was a most beautiful place to live--the large white house on the hill which still stands today. My Uncle Carl Musial who turned 92 on Oct. 8, still lives in Scarbro on the hill directly below the WOAY station. I stay in close touch with him as we talk via phone at least weekly.
I attended Scarbro Elementary from 3rd to 8th grade and have many memories of those years. I had many friends from the St. Peter & Paul's Catholic School also since my parents were Polish immigrants and had friends in  the Polish families in that area. I have been doing some genealogy work on my family and may run across some pictures or papers that could be of interest to your website. If so, I will send them to you. My sisters Susie, Betty, and Helen and one remaining brother Frank have all moved to Cleveland, Ohio. As I have occasion to contact them I will ask for anything they have that might be of interest to your website." Many thanks, Edward Dziedzic
PS: I remember some of your contributors very well--Richard Fitzpatrick, Fred Burmer, Bill Wojtowicz especially.

Oct 8 2004 "Hi Dennis, I was recently directed to your website by one of my cousins. I am truly delighted and commend you on your efforts to expand the website. I grew up in Scarbro and lived there until we moved to Oak Hill when I was about 8 years old. My parents were Ruth (Lam) and Clay Garvin.  I have so many happy memories of living in Scarbro and it will always hold such a special place in my heart. I am truly grateful that I grew up in a community that was so very warm and caring. I recently visited Scarbro with cousins from California who hadn't been there in 30-40 years. We visited the remnants of the company store, post office, Presbyterian church, Frank Surber's restaurant (my aunt Faye was married to Frank). It's hard to imagine how active Scarbro once was. It was especially nice to read BJ Bernath's message about Casimir and John Pleva, who are very dear to my heart. Casimir was a very close friend of my dad. I also would like for you to forward my message to Brenda Coffman Hall as I would love to hear from her. I had lost touch and didn't know where she was so I was excited to see her email. I along with my good friend, Nancy Gooch Whyte, and aunt, Geraldine Garvin Spadaro, always attend and enjoy the Scarbro reunion. Keep up the good work!" Best wishes, Margaret Garvin

Oct 2 2004 "Hi Dennis. Just wanted to drop a short line or two and tell you that we just enjoyed a visit by Casimir Pleva here on "Home Brew Alley." Casimir and his brother John are Scarbro natives and are now living in the Cleveland Ohio area. Their parents operated a saloon and dance hall known simply as "Pleva's." It was located across the railroad tracks and creek from the drug store and theater at Scarbro. There was a foot bridge across the creek to get to the building. Pleva's was a popular spot for the European immigrants to visit after working in the mines and on payday. Cold beer and polka music were the main attractions.
In later years the building was used for a teen center known as the "Bunny Hop" and then for a bar known as "BJ's" before being torn down.
In past years Casimir and John have come back to the area a number of times with their polka band "The Plevas" and performed at the Elks Lodge in Beckley for the Knights of Columbus fund raisers and for the Scarbro Whipple Carlisle Reunion.
For the past two years Casimir and John have came back alone and performed for their friends free of charge at the "Three Gables Club" in Hill Top. Casimir plans to return with his son in May 2005 on the 3rd or 4th weekend and play at the Gables again.
Casimir was quite surprised and pleased to learn that there was a web site dedicated to the Scarbro area and hopes that some of his friends will see this letter and be able to return to the area at that time and visit with him.
I am attaching one picture of Casimir Pleva and two of Casimir and John playing at the Three Gables last year.
If anyone is interested in the confirmed date of their appearance they may contact me at bj_bernath@yahoo.com and I will get back with them. Thanks again for a great site." BJ Bernath

Sep 24 2004 "Dennis, I have a question, which is probably "out of the norm" for you. And I fully understand if you're unable to answer it, but thought I'd give it a try. The following message, MESSAGE: February 13, 2004  posted on your site, is of extreme interest to me. See, Robert Swan Fothergill is also my GG Grandfather, and through all my genealogy research, this is the first I've seen someone else inquiring about him (Especially about the mine incident). However, I'm not familiar with a Maureen Downey, and would love to email her, and find out how she's related. Any possibility your records have return emails from messages that are posted to your site? Any help would be greatly appreciated. And if not, I'd at least like to thank you for your fantastic site. Dina and I were friends when we were very young. After school, we use to walk together to the Post Office for the mail and/or go to the company store. My parents owned the house facing Gillenwater's garage. My mother lived there until she passed away March of 2003. My brother Sam still lives in the house. Sep 5 2004 "Hi Cuz ! I can not put into words how excited I was when I received your e-mail. I can't believe that after 60 years I found another cousin. Your grandmother and my grandfather were brother and sister. Carrie Gamrat is my cousin's, Kenneth and Nancy, daughter. I'm embarrassed for not knowing this info. Our family is very large as you can see. I have additional information for that family tree. James and Eva Mylenek's grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren are missing. Along with info for my siblings AndersonChester, Edward (Eddie), Dorothy and me. James & Eva Mylenek had 6 children, 25 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren. So you see why it is difficult to keep track of cousins. I was born November 16, 1943. I married Carmine Palmieri (1-29-66) and we had three children - Angela age 38, Domenico age 31 and Andrea age 28. I put this info together and send it to you.  Bye and thanks again." Mary, We are cousins. My grandmother was Florentina Mlynek Chadra (Hadra).  I Believe that she was the sister of John Mlynek. On July 3, 2002 Carrie Gamrat (nee. Mylenek / Mlynek) emailed me and informed me that she found the message I posted on Rootsweb message board and advised that John and Mary Mlynek are her Great Grandparents. Andrew Mlynek was her Grandfather. She has since emailed me a Mlynek family tree. Some of the Mlynek families changed the surname to Mylenek which was the reason I couldn’t find them. This weekend I will try to email what information I have amassed so far. I have a family tree to give you,  Dennis Chadra dennis@scarbrowv.com

Our house was next to them, on the other side of us was Mike Delridge and his family. My dad was Glen Sifers and my uncle James Sifers lived across the road from us. I do know some of the Lopez family still live there. Some other surnames I remember from then are Gillenwater, Aranda, Nieto, and at the bottom of the hill across the road the Tanner family. I'm not sure I have spelled all of the names correctly. Two friends from Scarbro were Jerry Wright and Dave Fisher. Mike Hambrick lived over by the school. It was interesting to see the class pictures from Scarbro Elementary. Miss Smith was my fourth grade teacher, my last year before moving to Michigan. Again, thanks for the site." Steve Sifers

Aug 5 2004 "Hi Dennis, While researching my fathers place of birth I came across your site. It was actually the only thing that came up on Carlisle. My father was born there in 1937, His father was a coal miner. Anyway, I wanted to say "Thanks" for the website and preserving a little piece of history. Could you tell me the names of the closest mines to Carlisle?" Thanks, Tina (Cheek)
p.s. Grandfathers name was Fred Cheek

Aug 2 2004 "Hi Dennis, I grew up in Scarbro from 1936 thru 1954. I am enjoying reading various accounts, and some I remember and some I don't.  For example, several have mentioned that the company store and theatre were connected, (Not so). There was a parking lot of sorts between them, accessed from the backside of the theatre. A small creek ran behind the company store and theatre.  Groceries could be delivered at that time by a Mr. Curtis Taylor. He had only one arm and could deliver such items as refrigerators by strapping them to his back, Hydraulic tailgates were not the norm during those days.
Additionally, to the right of the company store and post office, there were 2 rows of garages, that were rented out to residents of company houses who were fortunate enough to own a car. I also remember that during the war, these were used to store paper collected during paper drives that were common at that time in our history.
My brother Pat sent me this site, he now resides in Princeton. Thank you for the wonderful web site." Fred Burmer

Joe and Pauline Janiszewski were very close Family friends growing up." Larry Humphrey of Scarbro

Jul 29 2004  "Dennis, I would like for you to add three surnames to your list.  Burmer, Janiszewski, & Gillespie. My father, Joseph P. Burmer lived in the Scarbro/Carlisle all his life. At the time of his passing, he lived in the first house on Cafego road as you turn off of rt 19. My mother, Anna R. Burmer (Janiszewski) also lived her life in the Scarbro/Carlisle areas, she had two brothers...one, Joseph, that lived in Whipple and the other (Frank) in the house behind and above my fathers house on Cafego road. My fathers sister Rose Gillespie resided in a house on Cafego road, at the top of the steps. Currently this house is occupied by my uncle (Rose and Joe's) brother and his wife, John & Pat Burmer. Myself along with 3 brothers and 1 sister were all born and raised in the Scarbro/Carlisle area. I was surprised and excited in finding this website and I hope that it continues providing historical information for years to come." Sincerely, James P. Burmer currently of Princeton, WV

Jul 7 2004 "I will check for some pictures. About the only newspapers from 50 or more years ago would be the Fayette Tribune. Mostly, all I have is some great memories of growing up in Scarbro. I read the message from the Bishop relative and noted that she had the old news reels from the Rialto Theatre. One of the films was of George Cafego, All American football player at Tennessee in 1939 and Hessiman Trophy winner, when he played for the Brooklyn pro football team. I can't remember the team name. He was a relative of Beans Craft who lived just up the street from the company store. Cafego was the talk of the town when he came to town. The Bishop relative mentioned her Uncle Paul. I grew up with Pat Bishop. We went to Mt Hope High School, and we graduated in 1953. Sorry to hear that he had passed away.
One of the notes I read mentioned the Lantern House. I'm not sure what they were taking about because I have never heard that term. But, we lived in company house #100, Erringtons in #101, and the next house was #102. Back in the 40's or early 50's, I believe this house #102 was the parsonage for the Presbyterian Church, and the people who lived there for a while were the Landrums. They could be referring to the barn that was located about 200 yards to the right of the company store.

My Dad stored New River Company vehicles and equipment in the barn which was used for maintenance of company tipples. Before my Dad started using the barn, that was where the mules were kept. As more people learn of this web site, you should get a lot of information. I know that my Dad had pictures of Scarbro taken about 1900, but I don't know what happened to them. I know there were pictures when the depot was located in the area next to the theatre. He also had pictures of the depot across from Mahoney's store. I have a suggestion for your web site. If people would include their e-mail address maybe some long lost friends could contact each other. I know my sister would like to hear from Brenda Coffman. Brenda was always good for a laugh.  Maybe you could forward our e-mail addresses to her." Jim and Cookie Thompson

Jul 6 2004 "I enjoyed your site on Scarbro. I was born (1935) and raised in Scarbro. I worked at the Rialto Theatre from 1948 until July 1952. The building contained the theatre upstairs with the projection booth behind the two upper windows. Outside of the projection booth was the balcony. Because of the segregation in those days, the balcony was reserved for colored. Whites only in the main floor. There was only one restroom which was maintained by Charley Bugin. The colored were not allowed to use the restroom. George Collins was the theatre manager. I believe that the building was owned by Clarence Bishop. |
The lower part of the building housed the drug store owned by Dr. Henderson. There was a pool room and beer joint in the back side of the building. Also, there was a barbershop on the left rear corner. I cleaned the barbershop in 1950 and 1951.

At one point in the late 40's and early 50's, my brother Charles was the projectionist, my brother Tom sold popcorn, and I cleaned the theatre. When my brother Charles went into the Navy in 1950, my brother Punk started cleaning the theatre. A lot of people didn't know it, but the theatre was known for the big rats. My baby sister (Cookie) even practiced her piano lessons at the theatre while I was sweeping.  I made $15 a month cleaning the theatre, $20 a month for selling popcorn, and $25 a month (every other night) as the projectionist. At no time was the theatre and drugstore ever attached in the company store. All three floors of the store contained merchandise and storage for supplies.
The building attached to the company store was the post office. We lived directly behind the company store. To the  left was the New River Company Doctor (Dr. Price, then Dr. Samuel DePuy) and to the right lived the Erringtons. Bill Errington was the butcher for the company store.
I left Scarbro in January 1955 when I joined the Air Force." Jim Thompson, Commissioner, Port of Manchester, Manchester, Washington

Jun 26 2004  "Hi again Dennis. I just read the letter from Mary Jane Sanchez about the old swimming hole back in "Sweetwood Holler" and it brought back memories for me also. I went looking for it a year or so ago and finally found it. It was overgrown and the creek had filled it in from flooding but I finally found the old path to it behind where the old log barn once stood. It is really a quiet serene place to reflect on the days of our youth and I really enjoyed the few moments I spent there. I hope the picture brings back many memories to the young at heart visitors to your site." Thanks again  BJ Bernath

Jun 22 2004 "My sister just informed me of your site on Scarbro, WVa. I was looking at some of the pictures and the one of the old Scarbro Theater and Drugstore does not state that the large building next to it was the New River Company Store and the small building attached was the post office. The company store had everything you needed in one place from nails to butter at Christmas they had a wonderful toy department. When you shopped you could have your groceries delivered.

There was a farmer, Mr. O'Dell, I think he lived around Oak Hill, he drove his truck loaded with vegetables, apples, peaches etc selling them from  neighborhood to neighborhood during the summer. He always had an apple for us kids.
Growing up in the Scarbro, Whipple, Oak Hill area was great. We walked everywhere and never had a problem with anyone. On Halloween we knew who gave the best treats and would walk miles to get our bags filled. Some of our best summer vacation was spent at the old swimming hole way back in the woods on Wingrove Hill, a small creek dropped into a large pool and made the perfect swimming place. Well I better stop, remembering makes me homesick for the West Virginia hills." Mary Jane Sanchez

Jun 15 2004 "Dear Dennis, Any idea how Scarbro got its name? I have been told it was named after my great grandfather, but he spelled his name Scarbrough (Robert W. Scarbrough born April 19, 1858, and died January 7, 1935). I have a genealogy that claims that the son of Robert W. Scarbrough, George F. Scarbro (born November 24, 1891, died November 10, 1961) my grandfather, was the first person to drop the "ugh" from the Scarbro name. But, I am fairly certain that Scarbro was not named from him or I would have heard him mention it. However, he was a mine foremen and superintendent at a dozen or so different mines in southern West Virginia. Does anyone know for certain where the town of Scarbro got its name?" Harold Scarbro

Harold, I read somewhere that the towns of Carlisle and Scarbro (Scarborough) are reported to have been named after cities in England by coal miner Samuel Dixon. Dennis Chadra dennis@scarbrowv.com

Jun 9 2004 "Dear Dennis, "Window To The Past" is a paperback book written by Melody Bragg and was published by Gem Publications in 1990. This book contains a number of good historical stories about Scarbro, Oak Hill, Mount Hope and Thurmond. I don't know if the Publishing Co still exists but I'm passing along their address to you anyway. Gem Publications, P.O. Box 29, Glen Jean, WV 25846.  No part of the book may be reproduced in any manner without written permission from the publisher. The writer got a lot of her information from early Fayette County newspapers. I'm going to pass along one of the stories in this book just to give you an example of the books contents. Good luck with your investigation into the history of Scarbro and the surrounding area." Margie Karau

March

Mar 10 2004 "My grandparents were the Bishop’s of Scarbro. My grandfather, W. Clarence Bishop, was the manager of the company store for many years.  There were four children, with 2 now surviving. Surviving are William C. Bishop, Jr. in N.C. and Carolyn Bishop Thornhill, still in WV. My mother, Ann Bishop Griffith passed away in May of 1993. My uncle, Paul S. Bishop, passed away November 3, 2003 in Birmingham, Alabama.
I have so many memories of Scarbro and the company store. We used to spend a lot of time with my grandparents in the summer and the short walk to the store and post office was our favorite past time. I can still remember the wooden display cases with all the candy behind glass.  We would point to which piece we wanted and it was then handed to us by the clerk, at which time we told her to “charge it to Papaw”. I remember hanging out in the post office talking for long periods of time to the clerk. My grandfather was postmaster in Scarbro for many years.
Once the company store was closing, my grandparents wanted to buy their house, which was owned by the company. In order to purchase the house, they had to purchase the other buildings (store, drug store, movie theater…etc.). I remember after both of my grandparents were deceased going in and helping the family clean out these buildings.

I have inherited many of the items that once were in these store such as ice cream sundae dishes and old ice cream tables and chairs. At one time I had the old news reels that were left in the theater. I am hoping that they will turn up one day. My Uncle Pat (Paul) was in possession of quite a few documents and pictures from Scarbro.  I have some of those now. I will try to find some good pictures to scan in at a later time. My mother wrote a history of our family in Scarbro which includes information on the stores and White Oak Presbyterian Church (which last I heard was a Baptist church). Anyone that remembers any of my family, I would love to hear your stories.  We still drive through Scarbro any chance we get if we are in the area. That small town has a lot of wonderful BIG memories for me." Beth Griffith Reisman  Granddaughter of W. C. and Eleanor Bishop Daughter of Ann Bishop Griffith (1923-1993)

Feb 16 2004 "Dear Dennis, I am sending a small contribution for a very worthy endeavor. Although I go way back, having left there when I was 14 handicaps me some, but if there is anything specific you want to know I could ask my sister - she still lives there and her memories are fresher than mine. She does not have a computer, unfortunately. My brother Joe, who lives in TX left there in about 1968 so he's a good source of knowledge, too. It was he who told me about your site. You must be quite a bit younger than I because I am not familiar with your last name.

My father and grandfather worked at the Whipple mine. My grandfather's name was John William and my father who had a twin named Leo, was named Cleo. My father was laid off in about 1956 after 22yrs and the mine closed down shortly thereafter. How I wish I had a photo of the old tipple.  I can see it in my mind's eye but that doesn't help. In Carlisle there used to be this huge fan that put fresh air into the mines. You cannot imagine how big it was. When Daddy drove too close to it (everybody turned around there) it would scare me because I was afraid it would suck us into it. But of course it was screened. It was still scary because of its size and the noise. I looked for it in 1975 when I was there and it was gone.
When I was a child Whipple was much neater. I was appalled in 1994 to see junk in almost everybody's yard. Also when I was little the co. store was snow white-it probably hasn't been painted since.  My older son (who has never seen where I was born) and I are planning a trip for April or May."  Sincerely, Connie Smith Osteen

Feb 16 2004 "The photo on upper left is of the Carlisle Church. I went there a few times with my grandparents. The photo on upper right is me standing where the RR tracks in Whipple used to be. When we were there in '94 the rails had been pulled up, but you could still see indentations in the earth. They were located approx. halfway between the Whipple store and the school up above. I walked back & forth from the school over the tracks (if I didn't take all those steps) & down the hill to my house 4 times a day the whole school year. Although the school was called Scarbro Elementary, it was actually in Whipple. They tore the old school down about '77 and built another on same site.

The lower left photo is the Catholic Church. When you make a right from Whipple to go to Carlisle the church is up on the right.
The last picture is of the Carlisle company store. Don't ask me why it's called Oakwood. I have a photo of 2 boxcars in between the store and the church and one of them was loaded. Don't know of a mine that was working then, but there apparently was one. All photos were taken Nov. 1994." Connie Smith Osteen

Feb 16 2004 "Hi Dennis, The 2 photos I just e-mailed are of the Scarbro Company Store when the old theater and drugstore were still attached. The front of the bldg. that is painted white was the theater (it's unfortunate about the graffiti) and the end of the bldg. that is painted white was the drugstore. I never knew what was on the second level. Will send more" Sincerely, C. Smith Osteen

Feb 15 2004 "Dear Dennis, I have photos taken in '94 of the Scarbro Co. Store while the old drugstore and movie theater were there, the Baptist church that set upon the hill from there, several photos of the Whipple store at different angles, the old Pure station, the hill that you started down from Oak Hill to go to Whipple, etc. There was a red building on the right as you started down the hill- it was a sheet metal place when I was a child.

My scanner is not working or I would be happy to share them with you. If you could send me your mailing address I'll send them that way.
We went inside the Whipple store & took photos of the old post office there and the locker where they kept meat. My husband just had to go to the basement to see what was holding the thing up. I lived in one of the small houses on the right side of Whipple (going towards Oak Hill) until I was 14. I went to Scarbro Elementary School from 1st to 8th grade-1957. Went to Collins High until Christmas vacation of my freshman year then came to NC where my mother was." Sincerely, Connie Smith

We believe the mine to be Scarbro, but are not sure. I am not sure of the year but believe it to be between 1900 and 1915.
